“It is said that, when asked how many ways there are from creation to God, Abu Sa’id replied, “According to one account, there are a thousand ways, according to another, there are as many as there are particles in existence, but the shortest, the best, and the easiest way to God is to bring comfort to someone else.”

It is in the same context that Rumi writes:

For God’s pleasure should you do your service;

What care have you whether you bear peoples’ praise or censure?

Or, in Sa’di’s words:

Service to people is the whole of worship:

The worship of God is not done

by rosary beads, robes of piety or prayer carpets.”
